Whole grain mustard is a thick, coarsely ground prepared mustard in which some of the mustard seeds are left whole. Dijon mustard is a creamy French mustard made from brown or black mustard seeds, white wine or white wine vinegar, unfermented grape juice (verjuice), and seasonings.

If it's to flavor a sauce or salad dressing, use prepared whole-grain mustard. One tablespoon equals one teaspoon of mustard seed.

The use of wine instead of vinegar, and brown and black seeds instead of yellow, makes many whole grain mustards pack a punch. I personally love the extra texture and bite of a whole grain mustard, and it's my go-to choice for cheese plates or ham sandwiches.
